How Long Does Double Glazing Last?

Upgrading or replacing double glazing can be a big investment, which is why durability should always be considered. Here, we take a little look at what double glazing is, what the benefits are, and how long it tends to last on average.

How does double glazing work?

Double glazed windows consist of a frame with two panes of adjacent sealed glass inside. While two panes are always better than one, it is actually the air between the two that provides the insulation. Special gas with thermo regulating properties is sometimes put between the two panes for optimum results, while regular air can also be used.

The standard thickness for double glazing is 4mm panels with 20mm of space between them, but panels can be thickened to improve the benefits listed below. All of our double glazing units can be customised to your unique requirements, whether you’re looking for frosted glass or a different colour on the exterior frame to the interior.

What are the benefits of double glazing?

As well as being a requirement for new buildings when it comes to energy efficiency, double glazed windows improve the value of your property and can shave costs off your heating bill. They are far more secure than single glazed windows, especially when paired with updated locking mechanisms.

Double glazing can also decrease condensation and improve the soundproofing of your home, reducing ambient noise from nearby motorways and preventing neighbours from hearing your conversations or music. Thicker panels or triple glazing can also be used to enhance this effect further.

How long do double glazed windows last?

High-quality double glazing can last a good 20 to 30 years when installed correctly, and even longer in sheltered locations. This lifespan applies to the sealed double glazing panes; the lifespan of an accompanying frame may be different depending on the quality and material used.

All of our uPVC frames are made using special colour mixes that are resistant to harsh rays from the sun (reducing discolouration) and have been tested in extreme British weather. They will never rot like timber frames and never need re-painting or re-sealing.
